Live from LA, It's Microsoft PDC!

I’m happy to report I’ve left the cold rainy northeast to bask in the warm sun of southern California. This year Microsoft is releasing the first large scale alpha of what they call Windows 7 at the Professional Developers Conference this week. They’re trying to get everyone as excited about this event as Steve Jobs does for his new Apple product announcements.

I’m really hoping that Microsoft will excite me more than they have with Vista but I’m not easy. There will be plenty of sites reporting on this event so I’ll try my best to provide my own little twisted view of what I learn.

While I had hoped they would give me my copy of Windows 7 today, they’re saving Windows 7 specific stuff until Tuesday. Today is all about “Cloud Computing” and the new Microsoft service called “Windows Azure”.  We even learned how to create programs today that will run on the Microsoft cloud server.

That’s right, all the code that we create would run on a Microsoft owned server. I’ll bet that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy right?  Naturally, the Cloud Computing investment also relies on your local provider to keep you productive. According to Microsoft, pricing for hosting applications on Azure would be “competitive”.

Azure

They say one advantage of Azure is scalability.  Not only will applications be designed to be available for your Windows 7 based machine but will be mobile accessible as well.  We already learned how to create a “Hello Cloud” application. Microsoft showed an existing demo of something called BlueHoo with the obligatory cute representations of the people around you.

Bluehoo
Boys are blue, Girls are red, and grey I guess if you’re not sure.

I’ll have more to write tomorrow about Windows 7 from my point of view. I’ve already had a sneak peek but can’t blog about it yet. You can however get an early fix (wink wink) from Mary-Jo Foley at http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1667

wow, I could think of a lot of other things to put in that cloud. At what point does Microsoft feel they will have sucked just about every dime out of us that they could? geez.....

I don't know what all the bitch'n is about with VISTA, I have been using it for over a year with not one problem; leads me to believe that the problem is not with VISTA it's either operator error or crappie hardware.

I agree! I've had Vista Home Premium since May 2007, and it has NEVER worked properly!!! It would take too much space to catalog all the glitches I've had with Vista. Any tech support I got was wrong or laughable!! I agree that we all need a free copy of MS7 because of all the things we've had to deal with using Vista.

I want to add my voice in on this! I agree with almost everyone else here, Windows Vista has been nothing but a pain in the behind since day 1!!! Instead of building something new, why don't they fix what they have!!! I have approximately 700 problems on my computer that the system says has no corrections for!! I doubt very seriously if good ol' Microsoft can come up with anything useful anymore!!

XP works fine for me, at work, keeping it simple, On the whole, new programs, software, all of it is just a ripoff, PCs suck in general. It's man's inhumanity to man...
Apple rules for computing, but still, what a f*&^$%#@! ripoff the prices.

Vista is a dog, and MS won't admit it. I've warned everyone I could to stay away. Don't hold out much hope that they'll get it right with 7. They don't know what they're doing.

Now that Apple is using Intel hardware, wouldn't it be time for them to go head-to-head with ms selling their os to replace ms os. Since ms can't seem to get it close to right, Apple should step up and fill the void. Let ms write the applications and Apple the os. Each can have their own monopoly and everyone wins.

I am always shocked by the ignorance I see in the computing world. Vista is BETTER, MORE SECURE, AND MORE POWERFUL than XP EVER was, and this is proven! I took over 200 of the nastiest worms, trojans and general viruses that would make you squirm, and ran them for over 40 hours straight on a computer with XP Professional and the other with Vista. XP broke within a few hours, and Vista lasted the entire time with NO breaks, both with Norton Internet Security 2009. Windows is VERSION 7 of the same operating system, but only will be somewhat redesigned with the current security measures, economy and status of what needs to be updated. It is foolish to not update your operating system. This is why there are so many computers with only XP being hacked EASILY. This is because it is necessary to update and keep it updated, not go backwards! SO get your facts straight. erniemusic2 at yahoo.com

I'm always shocked by ignorance like yours e. It epitomizes MS's attitude. At least officially, MS thinks Vista is a great product, but they have to force it down consumers' throats while corporate IT depts are skipping over it. Vista sucks up more hardware resources, yet is still slow and people can't do what they need to do. The mystery of Vista's slow sales and rate of adoption is only a mystery to people like you.

I have to say my life with vista has been love hate. since it's release i have only had 3 problems on 2 towers that i could not fix. my 32 bit machine wont see ram properly i put in 3 gigs it sees 3 gigs i put in 4 gigs it sees 2 gigs and nero just wont play nice with it either. now on my 64 bit machine only problem i have is with explorer when i cruise through folders it stopps working. otherwise I have had no problems that i can't handle myself. maybe if people would quit whining about how much vista sucks and take the time to become the pc experts that everyone with a home PC claims to be, they could actually handle their problems with a few minuites of effort on their part.

Hello PC Operators
I have to put my 2 cents into this, while I have run all of the programs starting from windows 98 which I thought was a great program for it's time, I did go to Me which i think was the worse OS from Microsoft. I have had XP on this computer and my wifes for the past 7 years and I have not had one issue and if I did, I would handle it myself, I did install Vista Business on my second hard drive and ran it on my home made computer which I build in 2000, I thought that the program was good but required 60% more resources than that of my computer and then NERO or Lexmark would work, If my computer was more advanced with a bigger HD, 3000mb of memory, 2.0 processor and up to date hardware and software it would work OK, again the problem with Vista is not the way it runs but rather the resource issue which I think it is beeing addressed in the Windows 7, now this cloud which is meant to empty our pockets, IT IS NOT GOOD

I never had a choice of os. Vista came with my new laptop (I was not offered an alternative). I have had problems with it ever since I got it (Jan. 2008). Don't tell me that i should get down & dirty with it and become an expert Vista user. First, I don't have the time. 2nd I don't have the knowledge. 3rd I just want to boot up and USE it, not FIX it! I agree, Vista was forced on me; therefore, a FREE copy of Windows 7 should be sent to me and all others Vista was foisted upon!

I have to agree...if somewhat. If the election last night is any indication, one topic brought up by everyone is that of choice. Vista does seem to be "BETTER, MORE SECURE, AND MORE POWERFUL than XP EVER was" but I must say I prefer XP. I must say having grown up with Apple I prefer them HANDS DOWN however the price and availability was always an issue with myself and those i knew in college so we reluctantly switch to MS. And speaking of MS, can anyone ever deny that MS and Bill gates have the biggest legal Ponzi scheme ever created? What other product do you know that is created with bugs in it so SP #X comes out every Ndays/weeks/months in order to create band-aids to fix a product that ends up with a mandatory upgrade in N years so we can sit around and gripe about the problems we have or perceive to have in order for the loop to start again? Cloud Computing is just another shell game by the Ponzi King Mr. Bill Gates and Co.

I am and will continue to be pro- Vista. I run Vista Ultimate and have never had a problem with it. After worshipping XP Pro for so long, and being hesitant to upgrade, I think Vista is awesome! With the proper drivers and Microsoft update, you will enjoy it as well.

imo ,Microsoft shouldnt of given every new pc Vista since it takesa good 1g to run. I think those who have Vista with 2g of ram should change there os back to XP or windows 98.

Cloud Computing?
That's where there heads are!
Cute but No Thanks!
Do not have Vista anything and happy I don't!
A relative has it and it sure didn't like Norton 360! So had to dump it.
Now it seems ok but to damn slow even with a Intel 3.16 Duo Core and 4 gigs of ram.
Yes XP's less secure. But I'll have to deal with it and take that risk with my usual AV and Firewall's.

Only thing I want from MS is to make DirectX 10 and 11 and future releases able to work for XP Pro for my games!
Keep the Bloat and resource hogging proggies out!

I didn't and still do not want Blackcomb/Vista, Windows 7 or 8 or Windows Sunshine etc...! lol

But Maybe Windows Xtreme Miracle?

Anyway I have a pretty fast & Powerful rig to run Vista.
If I did buy it and it would have to be really cheap! I would just put it on another Hard Drive and Dual Boot if I had no choice.

But I can wait!

Ok here it is another pie in the sky idea! at this point I have XP home and pro both working and I might say very well, with far fewer problems than my Vista Ultimate machine. There is always a new problem that has be addressed. So while I work in the industry of computing I thanks Bill Gates for Job security but I also have to say the home users do your homework and learn because we are all in the same bed of roses because of the Govt and the schools who let MS woo them into a dream state with money savings and when they want to break ranks they are brow beat. I will Keep my XP pro and buy a few more copies and when MS really gets stupid I will be well on my way down the road of LINUX and Apple. I will not pay MS for any cloud computing that charges for any stupid thing they want and OH BY THE WAY how can they make this secure when they cannot keep their other OS's secure. I can go on and on. I buy the newest version just to stay ahead of the game

Ok. I am a Home PC user!
I also have to use my PC for Work Related things! AND I AM "BY FAR" NO COMPUTER EXPERT! I had XP for years and knew how to use it and LOVED the Products I had that worked with it! Unfortunately my old PC fell Prey to a "Storm Based" Power Surge and that fried my Hard Drive. So I had to replace my PC. And Yes I too had Vista forced on me AND I HATE IT! My Husband is ready to throw this PC out of a Window just to stop me from being angry at my PC all the time!
I do all my own Pictures (Printing, Framing, the hole 9 yards). My old Programs ,for what I am really good at doing, I can no longer run because they are not compatable with Vista!
I have spent many hours on the Phone with both Tech Support and Corporite! Neither can seem to get me what I need!
This really is frustrating for a common PC user that does not have the Knowledge to fix problems on a PC when they arise!
And as I am sure you can see "Paying" for a "Spell Check" is a "NO GO".
VISTA IS REALLY NOT FOR A COMMON PERSON! BUT I DO LIKE THE FACT THAT IT ASKES TO APPROVE EVERYTHING! THAT IS IT'S ONLY PLUS AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED!
