New WinPatrolToGo Adds Safety Feature.

WinPatrolToGo 2014 Introduces
Version Update Engine.

New this weekend is the release of a little known accessory for fans of WinPatrol.  Unless you’ve been paying attention to new developments from BillP Studios you may not have known about the portable version of WinPatrol.
winpatroltogo2014

WinPatrolToGo is a single executable file that you can copy to a any folder on your hard drive, on an external driver or a flash/USB drive. It’s a small file that will fit on small portable drives so you can bring it with you where ever you go.

WinPatrolToGo allows you to explore a computer without installing WinPatrol.  If you’re the one who gets called when someone has a computer problem you’ll want this program.

Based on our WinPatrol technology this program is free but has some additional features available to our supporters who have upgraded to WinPatrol PLUS.

This version introduces the new WinPatrol PLUS Version Update Engine for verifying you have the current versions of programs which are popular and have a history of vulnerabilities. Our goal is to make updating a one step process so you and your friends have programs which are safe to use.

How do we use the "Version Update Engine"? I don't see it anywhere in the v30.1.2014 interface, either in ToGo or in the standard PLUS interface.

Thank you for your interest. The Version Update Engine is accessed on the PLUS tab. Just click on the button that says, "Check for new WinPatrol Version".

The service is designed to keep users informed of outdated software and providing a safe link to update. The initial release has been created to help confirm we're receiving the correct information and provide initial update information. When this feature is rolled into WinPatrol results will be user specific based on the information submitted.

There are a few goals I hope to accomplish.

1) Updating won't be automatic since we've seen too many complications when updates aren't fully tested. There are some exceptions but I generally recommend waiting 7-10 days before updating to let the world test new software.

2) Our Version update page will provide a safe link directly to website provided by the software developer. The risk of searching for a popular software frequently results in links to adware pages with dangerous installation programs.

3) Even when providing a link to the developers update we'll provide a warning of any additional software that is attached to an update. An example of this is demonstrated by the images of a sample Java update.

4) Version checks are currently limited to popular software but we're listening to feedback during this stage to expand what software is included in our checks. In future versions you'll have the option to select which software you want checked.

Thanks again,
Bill
